words can be light
or the purest of dark
or perhaps a nightlight
or electrical spark
when the electricity is out
they are a hand-held fan
if doors are closed
they are a battering ram

when you're thirsty
they are a drink
hungry? they're food
young? they're wisdom
old? they're a fountain of youth

words can be bullets, that rip up flesh
or the softest newborn asleep on a mother's breast

words are everything and also nothing
words are something
words are something I cannot define
without going in circles
without going berserk
without short-circuiting
